Listen without blame

Take their account seriously and ask gently. “Why didn’t you stand up for yourself?” can add pressure. Make it clear that support is available and that someone else’s hurtful behaviour is not their fault.

Keep a factual record

Note what happened, when and where. Save relevant messages without sharing them around group chats. Discuss who needs the information and why. Where someone is at risk, protection comes first.

Bring in the responsible adults

Contact the school and ask for specific protective measures, named responsibilities and a date to review progress. School psychology or other specialist services may be needed. Coaching must not delay these steps.

Understand the role of extra support

Coaching may help a child express feelings and practise asking for help. Ending the bullying is not the child’s responsibility. Significant mental health difficulties require appropriate professional care.
