Separation anxiety: what parents can do — without a diagnosis

A home-week piece: how clinging shows up, what turns the volume up, when a kids coach in Berlin is a sensible next step — no stamp, no forcing at the gate.

What the behaviour might be asking for — without a diagnosis

Clinging can be love, fear, habit, a body that does not believe the day. After a parental split, illness, a move, goodbye gets larger. Coaching sorts. It does not name a disorder. Confidence can sit underneath; it does not have to.

What often helps at home, and what turns up the pressure

Helps: the same sentence, the same clock, a return that is true. Pressure: “Be big.” Sneaking out. Telling others the child as drama. Three new rituals in one week.

Limits: coaching is not therapy

No promise of a child who waves. Danger: other hands.

Separation fear is not only at the nursery door. It sits in bedtime, in the office call, at the airport when a parent travels. Some children from six can name it. Some cling without a word. Coaching does not turn that into a disorder. It practises goodbyes that are small enough — five minutes, a ritual, a sentence that still holds tomorrow.

Parents may be exhausted without becoming hard. A child who cannot let go often needs an adult who is not panicking. The parent conversation exists so a child does not have to sit in a room and justify wanting closeness.

At a Berlin school gate a new trick rarely helps. A sentence that still holds tomorrow does, and a return that is true. Sneaking away saves the tears and spends the trust in the next goodbye.

You do not choose a package first. Conversation first, then — if it fits — a frame in Berlin or on a screen, in English or German. Kids life coaching stays support, not treatment.

At the gate the trick matters less than whether the sentence is true. “I’ll pick you up at four” has to be true at four. Sneaking away saves the moment and makes the next goodbye larger. In Berlin I see children who push the body forward because words are too small. That is not yet a disorder. It is a week that has lost its rituals — after a split, a trip, an illness.

At home the same clock, the same coat, less audience often helps. Three new rituals in one week is pressure again. If Monday is the fight, also read school anxiety.

A clear next step

If this is your doorway: a parent conversation. Kids life coaching is not psychotherapy and not medical treatment.

Questions parents ask

Should I sneak out while the child cries?

Sneaking saves the moment and spends trust. A short true sentence and a return that is real lasts longer.

When is coaching wrong?

When there is danger, a clear therapy recommendation, or the child refuses all contact.

Is this the same as school anxiety?

Sometimes they overlap. School anxiety often has school as the core. Read [school anxiety](/en/services/schulangst) if Monday is the fight.
