School anxiety: what parents can do — without a diagnosis

A calm home-week piece: how school anxiety shows up, what turns the volume up, and when a kids coach in Berlin is a sensible next step.

What the behaviour might be asking for — without a diagnosis

A child who will not go to school rarely hands you the cause. Sometimes it is a mark that has grown larger than life. Sometimes a break where nobody waits. Sometimes the body rehearsing Sunday night for Monday: stomach, head, a voice that will not come.

Parents search “school anxiety” because the phrase bundles the exhaustion. It is still not a stamp. It is a description. Under it can sit overload, a clash with a teacher, bullying, a move, thin confidence, too little sleep. Coaching sorts the description. It does not name a disorder.

What I hear in Berlin: “We have tried everything.” Usually that means more talking, more threatening, more rewards. The child has stored it as noise. Then you need less volume and a smaller next step — the coat, the door, the first lesson, not the whole term.

What often helps at home, and what turns up the pressure

Often helps: the same sentence in the evening and the morning. A clock that is not up for debate. An adult who walks to the door without giving a speech. After school, not an interrogation. A line like “you have to function, we pay fees” turns the volume up. So does “you are lazy”. So does humour that shames the child in front of siblings.

Public ranking hurts: telling relatives how dramatic Monday was while the child is listening. They learn that their fear is the family story. Better a short private note: what worked, what did not, what may be two centimetres smaller tomorrow.

Telling school without turning the child into a case is work. Some teachers hear. Some do not. Coaching does not magic that. It can give you language for that meeting.

When in-person coaching in Berlin is the better fit

When the fight owns the flat, when sick notes become a strategy, when you stop sleeping — an outsider can take heat out. In Berlin I work in person. The child does not need to like me like an aunt. They need a room where Monday is not already decided.

When online coaching from Dubai or Germany makes sense

Living in Dubai or between time zones: school anxiety Dubai. In Germany and Berlin is too far: online in Germany. Anywhere else only with quiet: online.

Short answers: FAQ. Packages after the parent conversation.

Limits: coaching is not therapy

I do not treat an anxiety disorder. I do not promise attendance. If a service recommends therapy, if there is danger, if a child is self-harming or not eating, that belongs in other hands. Stepping back is the professional move, not a sale.

A clear next step

If this reads like your week: a free, no-obligation parent conversation. Kids life coaching is not psychotherapy and not medical treatment.

Questions parents ask

Should I force my child through the school gate if they cry?

Force rarely builds trust. A small, clear morning plan beats a power struggle at the door — and beats three days off with no conversation.

When is coaching the wrong path?

When there is acute danger, when a professional service clearly recommends therapy, or when the child refuses all contact. Stepping back is more honest than a package.

Does this help if school is the problem?

Coaching does not redesign the school. It can give the child language and the parents a cooler view. School stays school. If peers are the wound, see [bullying](/en/services/mobbing).
